Anime can be good: SKET Dance

Sket-logo2

I've been slacking a little on early impressions, but this will be an easy one to knock out. I really don't have a lot to say about SKET Dance so far.

Honestly, it's rather middle of the road.  It's certainly not bad, but it doesn't stand out in any particular way either.  In some respects it reminds me a great deal of the fantastic Full Metal Panic- Fumoffu?! without the paramilitary themes, unique personalities and relationships between characters, and any sort of Bonta-kun equivalent.  Group leader Bossun is enthusiastic and sometimes naive, very typical qualities of the young shonen manga hero, but also gains an intense level of concentration when wearing his goggles.  Onihime is the muscle - a former delinquent who now uses her abilities to help people, instead of terrorize them. Switch is the information specialist and communicates only through text to voice software on his ever present laptop.  Together they solve the problems of the student body.  It's entertaining and fun, but it still feels very formulaic and fails to develop a unique voice, failing to deliver on the energy and colorful cast promised in the opening.

SKET Dance may be the first show that I drop this season.  I'm already falling behind.  As of today I'm an episode behind on Hanasaku Iroha, Blue Exorcist, [C], and Tiger & Bunny.  It's good enough that I may come back to it during a slower season, but it may not be good enough to keep it in the current rotation.
